Five Ways to Step Up Your Nutrition Plan Today
We all want to improve the way we eat -- but don't know where to start? Here are some simple tips you can implement today to help you be a healthier you!
Start the day right. Breakfast really is the most important meal of the day. It jumpstarts your metabolism, and sets the pace for your appetite for the rest of the day. While something for breakfast is better than nothing, making this a nutritiously dense meal may help ensure that you do not over-eat for the rest of the day. Aim to include fruit, a whole grain, and a source of protein at this meal.
Drink your water. Most of us run around so much all day that the last thing on our mind is to drink water. Having a water bottle around all of the time is a good way to set yourself up for success. Increase your water intake slowly, adding four to eight ounces at a time.
Include fruits & vegetables in EVERY meal. These foods are loaded with vitamins, minerals & fiber. They are high in nutrition and low in calories. Most people do not include enough of either in their daily intake. Aim to include a fruit or vegetable at each meal and snack to help fill you up with less calories.
Use your fist. What is a portion? Use your hand as a guide when trying to measure food portions. If it is bigger than your fist, it is probably too much.
Watch the clock. Going too long between meals is a recipe for disaster. We tend to get too hungry if we go for long without food, which can cause use to make hasty decisions and end up eating more than we had intended. Plan ahead and carry snacks with you so that you don't end up running around for half of the day without any food in your stomach. Eating on a regular basis can also help to increase your metabolism.
